Hope, Love, and Action
Hoes Of Appalachia believe everyone deserves to have a place to belong and feel safe and supported. Our aspirations are to plan and participate in direct action, grassroots mobilization, and community support as well as to seek out and promote safe resources to our communities. We recognize the compounded harm individuals experience due to intersectional identities and are striving to create a safe and welcoming environment for all by focusing our efforts first on lifting and supporting those who are most at risk.
"In our imperfect world, if conditions are such that those who have the least are taken care of, we will all be closer to freedom and justice."
-Jamia Wilson
Hoes Of Appalachia is an organization started by a group of dedicated queer ethically non-monogamous folx with a deep love for the Appalachian way of life. We are in the early stages of planning and gathering. Our goal is to make the area safer for queer generations to come and to inspire and support the community-minded, deep care and communal living way of life that has a rich history throughout Appalachia.
"Groups for mutual aid—the voluntary exchanges of services and goods—have sprung up across the country in response to the pandemic. But in Appalachia, those networks and exchanges were always here.
...when you look for a model on how to remake the world after the pandemic? Make it a place where strangers care for strangers without expecting anything in return. Make it a place where the community is only as strong as its weakest member, and where help is given, as much and as often as it can be. Make it like Appalachia—but don’t forget us this time."
-Allison Stine
